We are watching an icon in the making, Alfie Templeman at Latitude Festival ‘22.
WRITTEN BY SOPHIE BINGHAM
Alfie Templeman finally got to have his Latitude Debut after testing positive in 2021 and having to cancel and he couldn't have made up for it in any better way. After the release of his most recent album - Mellow Moon, Templeman has lined up an impressive amount of festivals and a UK headline tour announced for October. Helping open up the Obelisk stage (mainstage) following after roots rock and roll stars, sister duo, Larkin Poe, he had everyone waking up early and making their way to the stage at 1:30pm. We actually bumped into Alfie, in the crowd, during Larkin Poes' set as he described them as “blues-y” and a ``great band to watch”. He mentioned that he had been quite busy and he was definitely not exaggerating, having to run straight from Latitude to Truck festival down in oxfordshire, he has a busy month ahead.
His latitude set was perfectly crafted, with a variety of songs from ‘Mellow Moon’, ‘Forever Isn't Long Enough’ and some from ‘Happiness in Liquid Form’. He played some of the fan favorites, ‘Broken’ had the whole crowd singing along waving their arms and swaying around, the crowd was full of children on shoulders, everyone was having the best time and its not difficult to see why. With his onstage band, Alfie puts on a show worth watching.
This 19-year-old superstar is definitely the one to watch within the indie-pop revival, it won't be long till he is headlining stages across the UK, after opening for Declan McKenna on his ‘Royal Albert Hall’ one night only extravaganza and opening for McKenna’s ‘zeros” tour at Brixton. Alfie has definitely made a name for himself, not based on the talented acts he has supported but due to his sheer talent and genius when it comes to playing and producing music to his lyrical writing.
Mellow Moon is an insight into Alfie’s mind, with lyrics that this generation can lock onto and relate with, in the 2nd track of the Album, Broken,
‘Don't you feel like you're broken? I can't read the signs and some things, they just go unspoken’.
Discussing the difficulties of feeling like you are not complete and sometimes feel like you're malfunctioning, something that everyone can relate to or feel like they are an outcast among everyone else. In the moment that he played ‘Broken’ at latitude the crowd was singing along to every word.
He says that he ‘listened to so much Arlo Parks’ that she definitely influenced more of the R&B style tracks. In the same interview with BBC’s Future sounds he stated that the album has a little bit of everything.
The album is already impressive but knowing that Templeman produced everything in his bedroom absolutely makes this one of the top albums released this year. His musical talent is no surprise as he comes from a family full of musical influence.
No one can guess what's next in-store for him, but the only way for Alfie Templeman is onwards and upwards, after his performance on friday, he is definitely part of my Latitude highlights.
